The Doctor flinches at the gunshots, his ears ringing.
He squeezes open an eye and he's actually rather surprised to see that he can move his hands and that yes, he can establish that he has all the bits he needs. Lovely. The Doctor wriggles his fingers and gets right to work trying to free himself, tugging at the roots and he thinks Eva is yelling something but all he can see is her mouth moving. No words. Just that and the ringing. That's what you get when you have a gun plus a Time Lord's senses. Not so good when put together!
The roots are already growing back and trying to make a pass at the both of them when he finally stumbles free. The Doctor bolts up like an uncoordinated giraffe being pinched, reaching out and grabbing Eva's hand in his.
"Come on!" he says, feeling his voice in his throat but not able to hear it. Eva, next time he's going to have some Serious Words about you and guns and other things he hasn't had the time to think about just yet.
The Doctor staggers free of the little thicket he'd gone and gotten himself trapped in until they're back at Eva's log and her shoe tree. This time he makes a thorough check of the trees, making sure there aren't any cross ones that want to have a go at them as well. Really, it should've been the first thing he did, but he'd thought this place was simply too dull to have that sort of thing. Once he's certain they're safe, the Doctor turns to Eva, rubbing at one of his ears with one hand.
"Sorry," he says. "Normally the trees behave themselves here. I think. That's what I remember," he adds almost defensively.
The Doctor shoots Eva a look. He dares her to argue. In fact, she can try all the arguing she likes, because his hearing is slowly coming back and he might have a perfectly valid reason for pretending he can't hear her and her human logic.
